How Long Does a Deck Build Take? A Timeline Breakdown

Writer: Alexandra WilsonAlexandra Wilson

If you’re dreaming of a new deck, you might be wondering: how long will it take to build? The timeline for deck construction can vary based on design complexity, size, weather, and even the permitting process. At Iron Ridge, we specialize in building high-quality composite decks using modern techniques like aluminum framing and helical piers, topped off with beautiful finishes such as aluminum railings and even pergolas with lighting. To give you a realistic idea, let’s break down the timeline of a typical deck project from start to finish.

Deck Building Timeline: From Design to Finish

Below is an overview of the key stages in a deck build and approximately how long each step can take for a custom composite deck with aluminum framing, helical pier footings, aluminum railing, and a pergola addition:

  1. Design & Consultation (1–2 weeks): Every successful project starts with a thorough design phase. In this stage, you’ll meet with our design team to discuss your vision, choose materials and review preliminary plans. We often use 3D renderings or show you similar past projects to help finalize the design. This phase typically takes a week or two of back-and-forth to get every detail just right. Once you approve the design and sign the contract, we move forward.

  2. Permitting & Approvals (2–4 weeks): Before any construction, we handle the building permits and, if applicable, HOA approvals. Our team will prepare detailed plans to submit to your local municipality. Depending on your township or city, getting a permit approved can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month (sometimes more if revisions are needed). If you live in a community with a homeowners association, we’ll also provide any documents or drawings they require. While this waiting period can be a bit anxious, we keep you informed of progress. Rest assured, we’ve been through many permit processes and will expedite it as much as possible.

  3. Site Preparation & Helical Piers (around 1-2 days): Once permits are in hand, the on-site work begins! First, we prepare the site. This involves clearing any obstacles or old structures where the new deck will go and marking out the deck’s footprint. Next comes the installation of helical piers for the foundation. Helical piers are screw-like steel posts that are driven deep into the ground, providing incredibly stable support for your deck. They can often be installed in a day or two with hydraulic equipment. Unlike waiting for concrete footers to cure, helical piers are ready to build on immediately, which saves time. After the piers are installed, an inspector may need to approve the footing placement (depending on local code) before we proceed to framing.

  4. Aluminum Framing Construction (3–5 days): With a solid foundation ready, our crew constructs the deck’s aluminum frame. Aluminum framing is a fantastic modern choice because it won’t warp, rot, or rust over time, ensuring your deck’s structure stays level and strong for decades. The framing stage usually takes a few days as we assemble the beams and joists according to the design. Aluminum components often come pre-engineered, which helps speed up installation. Once the frame is built, we double-check that everything is square and securely anchored to those helical piers. An inspection of the framing might be scheduled at this point as well, as part of the building code requirements.

  5. Composite Decking Installation (3–5 days): Now your deck starts to really take shape. We install the composite deck boards across the framing. Composite decking (from top brands like Deckorators or TimberTech) is designed for quick installation with hidden fastener systems that give a clean look. Depending on the size of your deck, laying all the boards and picture-framing the edges can take a few days to about a week. We take care with every board to ensure a beautiful pattern and a safe, smooth surface. If your design includes special details like inlays or a chevron pattern, this step might lean toward the longer side of the estimate to get those features perfect.

  6. Pergola & Railing Addition (2–4 days): With the main deck surface done, we add those extra features that make your deck truly special. Building the pergola usually takes a day or two to install all the posts, beams, and rafters. Around the same time, we put up the aluminum railing panels along the deck’s perimeter – typically a one-day task since the sections are pre-fabricated. Finally, an electrician hooks up any post lighting or integrated lights (about another day’s work). At this point, your deck, pergola, and lighting features are fully installed and wired.

  7. Final Touches & Inspection (varies depending on township): The project is almost complete! We do a thorough cleanup of the site, removing any debris and ensuring your new outdoor space is spotless. Then we schedule the final inspection with the building authorities. An inspector will verify our work meets all codes and approved plans. We handle this process, and once we get the green light, you’re all set to enjoy your deck!

Total Timeframe: For a project of this scope, you can generally expect around 3 to 6 weeks of actual construction time on-site (from site prep to final touches). Including the design and permitting phases, the whole process might span about 6 to 8 weeks in total. Simpler decks can be faster, and very elaborate projects or weather delays might extend the timeline a bit. The good news is our team will give you a more precise timeline during the planning stage and keep you updated at every step, so there are no surprises.
